This photographs is a group of soloists surrounding a piano during rehearsals. The rehearsal is for the Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall that took place on September 25, 1945. Attached is a description of who is in the picture and its significance. This promotion states:

“Soloists Rehearse for Toscanini Performance of Beethoven’s Ninth

Left to right: Norma Andreotti, soprano; Robert Shaw, director of Collegiate Chorale; Nan Merriman, mezzo-soprano; Jan Peerce, tenor and Lorenzo Alvary, bass, all of whom will appear with Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra when the Maestro will conduct a benefit concert for the GOD PARENTS COMMITTEE FOR ITALIAN WAR ORPHANS, of the Italian Welfare League. This event will take place in Carnegie Hall, Tuesday evening, September 25, at 8:40 p.m.”
The benefit concert, this announces, is Toscanini’s important contribution for the IWL’s God Parents Committee for Italian War Orphans by performing the very famous Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
